Teaching Sunday afternoon
'The Power of Compassion in your Daily Life' a teaching by Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Building on the Dalai Lama's teaching on compassion, peace, and happiness, the afternoon session will explore how to apply these teachings in one's everyday life in practical ways. The teaching includes simple mindfulness and secular compassion meditations. Drawing on Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT). A program that Jinpa helped developed at Stanford University, he will demonstrate how making compassion an active part of one's everyday intention and perspective can lead to greater sense of meaning and joy in life. Part of this session will also involve simple guided mindfulness and secular compassion meditations.
Geshe Thupten Jinpa
Thupten Jinpa, Ph.D., was trained as a Tibetan monk and, in addition to the Geshe haram degree (equivalent to Doctorate in Divinity), holds B.A. in philosophy and a Ph.D. in religious studies, both from Cambridge University. He taught at Ganden monastery and was a research fellow in Eastern religions at Girton College, Cambridge University.
Jinpa has been the principal English translator to H.H. the Dalai Lama since 1985 and has translated and edited numerous books by the Dalai Lama, including the New York Times Bestsellers Ethics for the New Millennium and The Art of Happiness. His own publications include, in addition to numerous works in Tibetan and English, translations of major Tibetan works featured in The Library of Tibetan Classics series.
His latest books are A Fearless Heart: How the Courage to be Compassionate Can Transform Our Lives and Dispelling Darkness: A Jesuit’s Quest for the Soul of Tibet (co-authored). He is the main author of CCT (Compassion Cultivation Training), an eight-week formal program developed at Stanford University, the president of the Compassion Institute, and a noted speaker at international conferences on mindfulness, compassion, and contemplative practice.
Jinpa is an adjunct professor at the School of Religious Studies at McGill University, Montreal; the founder and president of the Institute of Tibetan Classics, Montreal and the general series editor of its The Library of Tibetan Classics series. He has been a core member of the Mind and Life Institute from its inception, and since January 2012, the Chairman of its board. Jinpa lives in Montreal and is married with two daughters.
